Tales about a Frenchman with some unusual [but clean] habits, that include burying his dog’s kennel and his own luggage pieces. The stories appear alongside other new works, which include an address to aliens on the subject of transport a poem about a non-talking parrot and some animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief.

The audience are invited to sing along. But, not to dance. Much. Hegley is known as a poet and singer with a common and comedic touch, hence the national reviews: “Awesomely mundane.” from The Observer and “Typically brilliant songs and stories about a Gallic small-town hero with a dog called Chirac.” from The Guardian
.

8pm, Thursday 20 May 2010, Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, £10 all tickets

Linda Marlowe interprets eighteen of 30 poems by Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, in this new stage show. Duffy imagines the wives’ perspective of famous men through the ages, slicing through history and myth, whilst also casting an astute glance over the modern world. Laced with dark humour and acerbic wit, this passionate exposé will enthral lovers of Duffy’s poems and newcomers alike.

The poems are based on the lives of the wives of famous people through history, but there are also fictitious renderings such as Queen Kong. There are poems about the Kray sisters, Myra Hindley and various mythical Greek figures like Mrs Midas.
This is Carol Ann Duffy’s take on what these women would have said about their men. Some of them are very funny, some are provocative, and others are quite dark.

Performer, Linda Marlowe elaborates: “I’ve approached it in my physical style to bring them alive as characters, even giving them accents – Queen Kong has a Hispanic accent to make her sexy and feminine… It’s amazing poetry and amazingly actable. It’s almost as if she’s written them for the theatre. It’s crying out to be acted.”

Linda Marlowe has enjoyed great acclaim for her previous solo work including Berkoff’s Women, which toured internationally and played West End seasons. In this new show, her virtuoso performance of the Poet Laureate’s brilliant and often controversial verse is set against a stunning audio-visual design.

8pm, Wednesday 12 May 2010, Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, £10 all tickets

Recommended 14+

Two highly respected comedians on the comedy circuit, Jason Manford and Bill Bailey, are coming to the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, in May. Confirming, once again, the Brewery’s status as a major venue on the comedy circuit, Manford and Bailey join the list of acts already appearing this summer that include Arthur Smith (23 Apr), Andrew Clover (27 Apr), Shappi Khorsandi & Jon Richardson (22 May) and Katy Brand (12 Jun).

Comic and musician Bill Bailey is to embark on a highland tour with his brand new live show, BILL BAILEY LIVE 2010. Due to popular demand, Bailey’s final surprise tour date on Saturday 29 May 2010 has already SOLD OUT at the Brewery.

Jason Manford, the multi-award winning comedian and star of ’8 Out of 10 Cats’ and ‘Live at the Apollo’, is making a beeline for the Brewery Arts Centre on Sunday 9th May. This new show, I’m Turning Into My Dad, is a work in progress and it gives the audience the opportunity to be the first to see Jason try out brand new material.

Chris Addison’s show this spring was so oversubscribed we have invited him back on 25 November, so audiences are urged to book places early for all of our comedy slots to avoid disappointment.

Regular visitors to the Brewery will be aware that we regularly showcase the work of emerging comic talent at the Barrel of Laughs nights held monthly in the intimate setting of the Warehouse Café. Come and check out the acts now and you will be able to say you saw them at the Brewery first before they were famous. [do we want to push this now or wait till we are more confident of the future line ups?]

Thirty schools, 10 Brewery Youth Dance (BYD) groups and around 900 local young people will be involved in a four day celebration of dance, culminating in performances on stage at the Brewery.

Exciting developments this year include Boyz Sports Moves, supported by Sport England. For the fourth day, BYD have created a special platform just for boys and young men. It will include a ‘Dad’s and Lad’s project choreographed by David Lloyd (of Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company). The dances have been inspired by 2facedance, the all male company that recently performed at the Brewery and some created with support from Tae Kwon-Do expert Mr Doyle.

Now in its seventh year, the Brewery Dance Platform features a wealth of talent from across South Lakeland as hundreds of young dancers take to the stage. There will be dances created by Primary and Secondary schools and Further Education establishments, as well as new work by BYD.

Performances at the Brewery Arts Centre: 7pm, Monday 22, Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 March 2010. £6 per person/ £5 concessions.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Brewery Youth Dance have been selected to be part of U.Dance England and are performing at the Lowry on 14th March (after their great success in London with Oribody in July 08).

For Interviews with Dance Development Officer, Helen Moffitt, or to arrange to see rehearsals at the Brewery, or in one of the schools contact Helen direct on: 01539 722833 ext. 271 or email: helen.moffitt@breweryarts.co.uk
