In March 2010 the Brewery Arts Centre, once again, plays host to the Gateway International Roots Music Festival – an annual event in its fifth year, which offers a month long celebration of international roots music showcasing inspiring, influential and supremely talented artists from across the globe.
With music genres ranging from Irish Traditional, Scottish Folk, Gypsy Swing, Blues, Reggae and Dub to a nine-piece band from Havana. The Festival, held over consecutive weekends in March, is a unique, exciting and dynamic melting-pot of international talent and a national showcase for evolving musical traditions.
Irish folk music is provided by Grada and Scottish folk traditions can be heard in the music of Lau. Blues inspired griot ballads will be performed by Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara and the Portico Quartet will offer their own unique style of jazz improvisation.
Blues legend, “Little Axe” Skip Mc Donald will be playing some of the most adventurous music of the past 20 years. Reggae beats come from the Dennis Bovell Dub Band and Gypsy swing jazz from The Joscho Stephan Trio. The Festival concludes with performances by Colombian act Cimmaron offering a blend of joropo music and dance, and Sierra Maestra will bring the fusion of Cuban sounds from Havana.
